Mr. Black Eterna Review — Shimmer in a Box

Mr. Black Eterna shimmer reverb pedal — blue sparkle finish with clouds and pearly gates artwork

Shimmer reverb is the effect that makes a single held chord sound like a choir ascending into a skylight. It’s gorgeous, it’s on every ambient and worship record of the last fifteen years, and it usually lives inside a $400 box with a hundred parameters. The Mr. Black Eterna does the one thing — shimmer — puts it in a small enclosure, and asks for a lot less. That’s a fair trade, and Mr. Black knew it.

What It Is

A dedicated shimmer reverb from Mr. Black, the boutique shop that specializes in exactly this kind of lush, single-purpose atmosphere machine. Reverb, plus a regenerating octave-up voice stacked into the tail, so the decay doesn’t just fade — it rises. Simple controls, quick to dial, straight to the feeling.

How It Sounds

Celestial. That’s the word, and there isn’t a better one. Hold a chord and it blooms upward into a glassy, angelic wash that feels like the ceiling opened. It’s genuinely beautiful, it’s easy to get lost in, and it does the shimmer thing convincingly for a fraction of what the flagship boxes charge.

I Traded the Wet for It

Full disclosure from my own board: I once sold my Neunaber Wet to make room for the Eterna. The shimmer honeymoon lasted about a month. Then I bought the Wet back. That’s not a knock — it’s a definition. The Eterna is a special-occasion reverb. The Wet is a marriage.

Bottom Line

The Eterna grades a 21 out of 36 — Disciple. Good box, honest price, know what you’re getting: shimmer, and shimmer only. It sits here and not higher because it’s a one-mood pedal, and shimmer is a polarizing mood — magic when the song wants it, cloying when it doesn’t. But if you want that rising, holy wash without mortgaging your board or your wallet, the Eterna delivers it cleanly. One trick. It’s a good trick.

Ascend. Just don’t leave it on for the whole set.

More info: the Eterna at Mr. Black — $199.95 direct from the maker, no middleman.
